The role of business incubators in enhancing the entrepreneurial process cannot be challenged. Advisory, technical and administrative support services which incubators extend play a major role in establishing a start-up and paving the way for unparalleled feats in future. The essence of economic development lies in the pace of entrepreneurship development. And, technical originations and innovations elicit enhanced entrepreneurial responses from people. A Technology Business Incubator (TBI) can ably support such an environment by mentoring, nurturing technical bents of mind and innovations. TBIs are, therefore, a desirable link, in the present context between manifesting the potential of technical innovations and New Enterprise Creation & Growth.
Against this backdrop Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), Ahmedabad has promoted a Technology Business Incubator, named, ‘Centre for Advancing & Launching Enterprises (CrAdLE). The Incubator is catalysed and supported by National Science and Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board, DST, Govt. of India.

At CrAdLE, an array of workshops, courses, and mentorship programmes will provide the knowledge and skills necessary to develop and execute an effective business plan. Individuals starting out in business, and SMEs looking forward to improving business performance will have access to a range of services including physical infrastructure, management support, technical support, access to funding, and networking.

Objectives
CrAdLE, a section 8 Company, fosters technology/knowledge-based entrepreneurial start-ups by:
- Nurturing them at an early stage and helping them overcome teething troubles
- Mentoring and providing all-equipped business environment for operation
- Extending value-added services viz. legal, financial, technical, IPR and mentoring to incubatees
- Strengthening business skills/knowledge of incubatees
- Providing a platform for speedy commercialization of technologies developed in academic and R&D institutions of the country
- Facilitating business networking for better and faster enterprise growth

The National Science & Technology Entrepreneurship Development Board (NSTEDB), established in 1982 by the Government of India, under the aegis of Department of Science & Technology, is an institutional mechanism to help promote knowledge driven and technology intensive enterprises. The Board works with the objective of promoting and developing high-end entrepreneurship for S&T manpower as well as self-employment by utilising S&T infrastructure and by using S&T methods. It also establishes a link by promoting networking between support system, academic institutions and industry.

Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), established in 1983, is a premier not-for-profit Institute in the field education, research, training and institution building. Sponsored by IDBI Bank Ltd, ICICI Ltd, and State Bank of India (SBI), and with active support from the Government of Gujarat, the Institute has been spearheading entrepreneurship nationally and internationally, with the belief that entrepreneurs can be created through well-conceived training and counselling interventions. The Institute organizes programmes under six focused thrust areas targeting creation of gainful enterprises and employment opportunities, thus promoting inclusive growth and development.
Acknowledging the Institute’s contribution towards creating and sharpening entrepreneurial culture, the Government of Gujarat has appointed EDII as the Nodal Agency for start-ups under the Start-ups and Innovation Scheme. To promote Innovations and Entrepreneurship through Incubators, EDII has been actively involved in capacity building of Incubator Managers in developing countries. A well-structured six-week training programme on ‘Promoting Innovation & Entrepreneurship through Incubation’ has been specially designed and is being offered by EDII under the aegis of The Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC), Ministry of External Affairs, Govt. of India, New Delhi, since 2011. So far, EDII has trained 177 incubator managers from 64 developing countries. In recognition of its achievements, the Institute has been honoured with several prestigious awards.
